23: A Taste of Armageddon

Kirk: Death, destruction, disease, horror. That’s what war is all about, Anan. That’s what makes it a thing to be avoided.

The first ever hot rod to top 200 mph was built on a model A frame, powered by an Edelbrock-built Mercury flathead. It broke several speed records culminating with a 208 mph run on the salt flats in 1950. The original car was lost the following year over the somewhat less predictable surface at the waters edge of the Daytona Beach speed trials. In its brief career it hospitalised two drivers and raised expectations of what could be accomplished in the pursuit of speed.

It looks unsafe, but damn do I want to drive it.
